1 This research was supported by the National Science Foundation under grant CCR-99-80590 Abstract – In recent years, iterative processing techniques with soft-in/soft-out (SISO) components have received considerable attention. Such techniques, based on the socalled turbo principle, are exemplified through turbo decoding, turbo equalization and turbo multiuser detection. In this paper, turbo multiuser detection is applied to a discrete multitone (DMT) very-high-rate digital subscriber line (VDSL) system to combat crosstalk signals and to obtain substantial coding gain. The proposed iterative DMT receiver is shown to achieve an overall 7.0 dB gain over the uncoded optimum receiver at a bit error rate of 7 10− for a channel with severe intersymbol interference and additive white Gaussian noise and with one dominant crosstalk signal. Impulse noise is detrimental to the proposed scheme but can be overcome through erasure decoding techniques, as is shown by example.

Turbo multiuser detection for coded DMT VDSL systems

In recent years, iterative processing techniques with soft-in/soft-out (SISO) components have received considerable attention. Such techniques, based on the so-called turbo principle, are exemplified through turbo decoding, turbo equalization and turbo multiuser detection. In this paper, turbo multiuser detection is applied to a discrete multitone (DMT) very-high-rate digital subscriber line (V...

Coexistence of 2-10 Mbps Home-Phone LANS and DMT VDSL via Multiuser Detection

This document augments contribution T1E1.4/99-120 by investigating the QAM transmission methods used for higher-speed Home-phone LANs (HPL), specifically 2-10 Mbps with symbol rates of 2-4 MHz. While higher speed, these newer HPL transmission methods are suggested to be easier for multiuser detection with respect to the pulse position modulation schemes used for earlier Home PNA 1.0 networks, b...

Coexistence of 1 Mbps HPNA and DMT VDSL via Multiuser Detection and Code-Division Multiplexing (99-120)

Home Phone Network of America (HPNA) specifies a 1 Mbps customer-premises data transmission system in the approximate bandwidth of 5.5 to 9.5 MHz, which overlaps and can significantly crosstalk into conventional VDSL transmission. This contribution introduces a multiuser detection and coding system that allows VDSL to operate in the presence of HPNA crosstalk with little or no degradation. The ...

Multiuser Detection and Turbo Multiuser Decoding for Asynchronous Multitone Multiple Access Systems

We consider multicarrier multiple access architectures that are based on combining discrete multitone (DMT) or filtered multitone (FMT) modulation with multiplexing of tones across users. Communications are asynchronous, e.g., uplink cellular communications. Optimum multiuser detection is formulated for demodulation of multitone signals that experience time and frequency asynchronism and propag...

Multiuser soft interference canceler via iterative decoding for DSL applications

This paper presents a method to mitigate interference on a transmission system by another system with an overlapping frequency band. The systems are uncoordinated so that they cannot be made to transmit in orthogonal coding space. The transmission environment is an interference channel rather than the multiaccess channel often considered in other multiuser detection problems, for instance at th...
